… and now you have to choose a colour too?

Posted May 25, 2020

When it comes to choosing a hearing aid, people are mostly focussed on getting the right level of technology and a design (in the ear or behind the ear) that suits their lifestyle. And that is exactly how it should be! A good audiologist is there to guide you in terms of making a smart decision about this.

For those people who select a hearing aid that sits behind the ear (the majority of wearers), there is also a choice when it comes to colour. We are often asked our opinion on this, so here it is!

Generally, hearing instrument wearers prefer their hearing aid to be discreet. A bright or light colour stands out more, and if the material the hearing instrument is made of is shiny, it can also reflect the light.

If you have a lot of hair then choosing a hearing instrument that best matches the colour of your hair would be our recommendation. If you are tossing up between two colours in terms of the closest match, go darker.

If you don’t have hair to hide the hearing instrument, then consider matching it to the frame of your glasses. And not beige, please not beige! We have some soft metallics that are similar to the old-fashioned matt beige if this is your preference.

It’s also worth knowing that if, in the future you’d like to change the colour, it costs around $120 to get both hearing aids rehoused to a new colour.
